The Todd Wagner Foundation is a founding and Hall of Fame sponsor of the Little Heroes Baseball Field Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization whose mission has been to create a first-class baseball facility and sports program for inner-city youth.
Little Heroes Baseball partnered with the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department to build the Whataburger Little Heroes Baseball Park at Dallas' historic Pike Park. Funded entirely with private funding, the $1 million baseball diamond and facilities opened March 2005. It features an ivy-covered outfield wall, recessed dugouts, raised pitching mounds and covered stadium seating. Organizers initially recruited players to play in four leagues, beginning at the T-ball level and up. Today, the organization operates dozens of teams. Little Heroes Baseball Foundation built the ballpark and will operate it for at least the next 20 years.
"As much as Little Heroes is about teaching baseball and having fun, probably more important will be the life lessons that are learned on and off the field -- character development, teamwork, discipline and the importance of education," said Todd Wagner.
The public-private partnership has been warmly received by the community. Park Department officials, facing shrinking budgets and increased needs, say innovative partnerships such as this are key to its success. Local residents rejoice that the park provides a safe haven and positive environment for neighborhood youth.
